INFLUENT: A 3D LANGUAGE LEARNING VIDEO GAME

Influent is a language learning game on Steam that teaches foreign language vocabulary through exploration and interaction. Instead of traditional learning methods, Influent places players inside a fully interactive 3D apartment where everyday objects can be clicked to reveal their names and pronunciation in the selected language. This approach helps language learners associate words with real world context by seeing objects in their natural environment making vocabulary easier to remember and more intuitive to recall and use in real life situations.

Designed for language learners, students, travelers, and polyglots alike, Influent focuses on building a strong foundation of practical vocabulary. Each word's pronunciation is voiced by native speakers, allowing players to hear accurate pronunciation while learning naturally. Influent supports multiple languages and allows players to learn at their own pace without time limits, pressure, or rigid lesson structures.

LEARN LANGUAGES THROUGH EXPLORATION

Influent turns language learning into an exploratory experience. Players can walk freely through a realistic apartment and interact with absolutely everything in the game, including furniture, household items, doors, drawers, and appliances. Every object is labeled in the chosen language, making it easy to connect vocabulary with familiar items from everyday life.

This method is especially effective for beginners and visual learners who want to learn vocabulary in context rather than memorizing word lists. Players can repeat audio as often as they like and explore words in any order, reinforcing learning through curiosity and repetition.

NATIVE SPEAKER AUDIO PRONUNCIATIONS

Every language in Influent includes native speaker audio for all vocabulary words. This ensures accurate pronunciation and helps learners develop better listening skills alongside vocabulary recognition. Hearing words spoken naturally is essential for building confidence in speaking and comprehension, especially for languages with unfamiliar sounds.

MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AVAILABLE

Influent supports a wide range of foreign languages, making it a versatile language learning game for multilingual learners. Players who are interested in more than one language can purchase additional DLC packs and then switch languages at any time, allowing them to study more than one language or compare vocabulary across languages.

This makes Influent useful for:

• Students studying foreign languages

• Travelers preparing for real world situations

• Polyglots learning multiple languages

• Gamers looking for an educational game with real life value

LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE

Influent is designed to be flexible and stress free. There are no forced lessons, no daily streaks, and no penalties for taking breaks. Players choose what to learn and when to learn it. This makes Influent suitable both as a primary vocabulary learning tool and as a supplement to traditional language study methods.

A LANGUAGE LEARNING GAME FOR GAMERS AND LEARNERS

If you are looking for a language learning game on Steam, a vocabulary learning game with native audio, or an educational game for learning foreign languages, Influent offers a unique alternative to traditional study tools. By combining interactive 3D environments with authentic pronunciation and player driven learning, Influent helps make language learning more engaging, approachable, and most importantly, fun!

“By immersing the player in the target language, Influent closely models the way we naturally learn our native language. I suggest giving Influent a try.”

A BRIEF HISTORY

Influent is a Language Learning Game focusing primarily on vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation. It was initially developed in Japan at the University of Tsukuba's Entertainment Computing Laboratory under the Monbukagakusho Government Research Scholarship.

After the research term ended, further funding from a successful Kickstarter Campaign allowed for the completion of the game. Two research papers on the ideas surrounding the game and its applications was published by the Springer and the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ).
