Lethal Autonomous Lovers

Lethal Autonomous Lovers

Three women. One trapped valley. And a man who can’t outrun the number he once chose.

Eighteen months after a ceasefire, the Vrela valley is still closed—nine hundred hectares of orchard and vineyard behind orange tape, with fruit eleven weeks from falling and no safe way for farmers to go in. Emrys Doran leads the Sennen Trust’s clearance team through a landscape that looks ordinary until it moves: buried sensors wake on footsteps, hillside launchers answer, and every decision is measured in metres, forms, and consequences.

Under a new international protocol, the machines must be found, catalogued, and destroyed—and the manufacturer is forced to send help. As the world watches the first valley processed under rules nobody’s ever tested, Emrys is pulled between three women who each hold a different part of the season: Zorana, his senior technician and a hostile reunion from nine years ago; Selma, the harvest buyer he’s forbidden to get close to; and Mirela, the company engineer who knows his past work better than anyone alive. In Vrela, there’s no villain and no cover-up—only the slow work of undoing what people built, and the even harder work of deciding who you’ll stand beside when everyone can see.

Character Bios

Emrys Doran (Protagonist) — Motif: The Two-Ring Burner
Emrys is a seasoned field operations manager leading the Vrela task—nineteen people in a schoolhouse with no hot water, a valley sealed behind tape, and a harvest that won’t wait. He’s competent, stubborn, and strangely domestic in the only way he knows how: cooking wildly over-ambitious dinners on two rings and refusing help like it’s a matter of principle. Before the Trust, he spent nine years at Tallis Dynamics—and something he decided in a meeting still lives in the ground here, waiting for footsteps.

Selma Korac (Romance Route B) — Motif: The Cash Bag

Selma owns the press and cold store that keeps Vrela alive: she buys the entire crop, holds most of the valley’s debt, and pays a hundred and ten people when the machines run. She’s loud, funny, shameless, and frighteningly direct—especially with Emrys, whom the Trust’s own rules say she’s an interested party he isn’t allowed near. With Selma, the romance is heat and appetite colliding with public scrutiny: she can’t stop the valley from watching, and she refuses to pretend that wanting something makes her weak.

Mirela Wendt (Romance Route C) — Motif: Eleven Recoveries

Mirela is a Tallis Dynamics recovery engineer sent under the new protocol—one of the few people in the world who can open a unit, read its logs, and make it inert without destroying what it can teach. She was Emrys’s junior once, and now she’s better than him at the most dangerous part of the job—an inversion that turns every conversation into a fast, gleeful argument with real stakes. Where others speak in declarations, Mirela speaks in questions, and when she can’t name what she feels, she reaches for the only language that fits: birds, wind, and the shape of the sky above a valley that still won’t let anyone in.

Zorana Pejic (Romance Route A) — Motif: Four Hives

Zorana is the senior clearance technician who walks the lane when everyone else stays back—quiet, exact, and built for the kind of work that asks you not to blink. Nine years ago, she was Vrela’s agronomist, guiding a visiting Tallis engineer through the valley and telling him where people actually walked; she remembers every metre of it, and she never speaks more than she has to. Her feelings don’t arrive as speeches— they arrive as actions, as presence, as the careful devotion of a woman who lays your kit out before you wake.

Key Features

• Three distinct romance routes, one grounded crisis: Choose a single path—Zorana, Selma, or Mirela—each with its own tone, private stakes, and ending.
• A professional, procedural setting rarely seen in romance VNs: Clearance work, cataloguing, and the pressure of land that can’t be walked on—rendered through lived detail, not lectures or speeches.
• Conflicts without villains: No conspiracies, no moustache-twirling antagonists—just ordinary people making hard choices with real costs.
• Three “weathers” of intimacy: Earth-and-growing-things (Zorana), money-and-worth (Selma), birds-and-sky (Mirela)—each route carries its own imagery, humour, and rhythm.
• A protagonist with bite: Emrys isn’t passive—he argues, initiates, gets things wrong on his own initiative, and still has to live with what he’s done.
